Adele Parks - Spare Brides
Das Buch 'Spare Brides' von Adele Parks besticht zu Beginn erst einmal durch sein wunderschönes Cover. Eine Frau ist darauf zu sehen, in Kleidung der 20er Jahre. Das Cover ist in blau und Pastelltönen gehalten.
In dem Buch geht es um Ava, Sarah, Beatrice und Lydia. Die vier leben im London der 20er Jahre. Sie sind eine Gruppe. Eigentlich ist Lydia glücklich verheiratet, Sarah vermisst ihren gefallenen Ehemann, Beatrice hat die Hoffnung aufgegeben jemals jemanden zu finden und Ava will keine feste Bindung, als jedoch Edgar Trent auftritt treten alle diese Faktoren in den Hintergrund.
Dieses Buch wirft einen wunderschönen Blick auf das London der 20/30er Jahre. Auf die Nachwirkungen des Krieges, die Vermischung von Adel und Neureichen und dem sorglosen Leben der jungen Frauen. Diese Frauen leben in ihrer eigenen Welt. Sie alle kommen aus verschiedenen Familien und haben unterschiedliche Hintergründe. So sind Sarah und Beatrice, die alt eingesessenen Reichen welche aber leider verarmen. Lydia ist in einer glücklichen Ehe und Ava steht für die Neu-Reichen. Jede dieser Frauen besitzt etwas, was sie nicht gebrauchen kann, die anderen aber gerne hätten. So ist Beatrice eine begnadete Zeichnerin und eine wunderbare Frau, welche aber leider keinen Partner findet. Ava hat viele kurze Affairen, aber keinen wirklich positiven Charakter. Und Sarah und Lydia stehen jeweils auf den Partner der Anderen. Dies bewirkt viele Gefühle untereinander, Intrigen und ein großes Chaos.
Das Buch illustriert in einer wunderbaren Art und Weise sowohl das Leben in den wilden Dreißigern als auch die Konsequenzen des 1. Weltkriegs und den individuellen Umgang damit. Adele Parks, zeigt ein sehr diverses Bild der britischen Oberschicht nach dem Krieg. Der Versuch der Jugend den Krieg hinter sich zu lassen, aber am Beispiel von Sarah und Beatrice auch die Folgen und Verluste des Krieges.
Zu dieser am Anfang etwas lockeren aber immer ernster werdenden Geschichte gehört auch zumindest in der englischen Ausgabe ein tolles Cover. Das Cover ist in Pastelltönen gehalten und zeigt eine junge Frau in der typischen Kleidung der 'Flappers'.
Ich persönlich fand, dass es als historische Fiktion sehr gut geschrieben war. Wie bereits oben benannt, hakte es am Anfang ein wenig in der Story. Jedoch schon nach kurzer Zeit konnte man ohne Probleme mit der Geschichte mithalten und sich rein denken. Die Story bekam immer mehr tiefe und die Charaktere wurden komplizierter. All dies geschah in einer wunderbar illustrierten Umgebung die sowohl Licht- als auch Schattenseiten der 'Roaring Tweenties and Thirtees' zeigte. Das Cover passte meiner Meinung nach gut zum Buch, da es durch das Pastell, erst einmal die gefühlt rosa-rote Welt von außen zeigte.
Alles in allem, ein schönes Buch, welches man jedem empfehlen kann der auf historische Fiktion steht. Das Buch hat zwar einen historischen Hintergrund, ist jedoch lockerer geschrieben als zum Beispiel Outlander, Eine Frage der Höflichkeit ( Amor Towles) oder die Herren der Grünen Insel ( Kiera Brennan)

Actually, Lydia is happily married, Sarah missed her fallen husband, Beatrice has given up hope to ever find someone and Ava does not want a firm bond, however, as Edgar Trent occurs all these factors go into the background.
This book has a beautiful view of London in the 20's and 30's. On the aftermath of the war, the mingling of the nobility and the nouveau riche and the carefree life of the young women. These women live in their own world. They all come from different families and have different backgrounds. So Sarah and Beatrice are the old-established rich, but unfortunately they are impoverished. Lydia is in a happy marriage and Ava stands for the New-Rich. Each of these women has something that she can not use, but the others like to have. So Beatrice is a gifted illustrator and a wonderful woman, but unfortunately she does not find a partner. Ava has many short affaires, but no really positive character. And Sarah and Lydia are always on the partner of the others. This causes many feelings among each other, intrigues and a great mess.
The book illustrates in a wonderful way both life in the wild thirties as well as the consequences of the first world war and the individual dealing with it. Adele Parks, shows a very diverse picture of the British upper class after the war. The attempt of the youth to leave the war behind, but with the example of Sarah and Beatrice also the consequences and losses of the war.
To this initially somewhat loose but increasingly serious story also belongs at least in the English edition a great cover. The cover is decorated in pastel tones and shows a young woman in the typical clothes of the 'flappers'.
Personally, I thought it was very well written as a historical fiction. As already mentioned above, it had a little bit of trouble finding into the story at the beginning. However, after a short time you could easily keep up with the story and think about it without problems. The story got more and more deep and the characters became more complex. All this was done in a wonderfully illustrated environment that showed both the light and shadow sides of the Roaring Tweenties and Thirtees. The cover fit in my opinion well to the book, as it showed through the pastel, first the felt pink-red world from the outside.
All in all, a nice book, which can be recommended to anyone who is interested in historical fiction. The book has a historical background, but is more casual than for example Outlander, Rules of Civility (Amor Towles) or gentlemen of the Green Island (Kiera Brennan)

Personally, I thought it was very well written as a historical fiction. As already mentioned above, it had a little bit of trouble finding into the story at the beginning.
