Jo Baker - Im Hause Longbourn / Longbourn
Ich habe vor den Weihnachtstagen das Buch, im Hause Longbourn von Jo Baker gelesen. Das Buch greift die Geschichte von Jane Austen 'Stolz und Vorurteil'auf. Jedoch spielen nicht die Töchter des Hauses die Hauptrolle sondern Sarah die Dienstmagd.
Sarah ist die 'persönliche' Magd von Elizabeth. Sie ist eine von fünf Dienstleuten im Haus. Sie wurde von Mr. und Mrs. Hill, dem Dientsleute-Ehepaar aufgenommen wie ihre eigene Tochter und lassen sie Haushalt helfen. Eines Tages taucht James Smith auf dem Hof auf. Er bittet um Anstellung und wird bald darauf angenommen. Sarah freundet sich schnell mit ihm an. Die Sache verkompliziert sich jedoch, als die Familie Bingley in die Nachbarschaft zieht. Sie bringen ihren dunkelhäutigen Dienstboten mit, welcher Sarah sehr schnell um ihren Finger wickelt. So tauchen nach und nach alle bereits bekannten Charaktere von Austen auf: Mr. Bingley, Mr. Darcy, Mr. Collins und Mr. Wickham. Als jedoch Probleme mit Mr. Wickham auftauchen verschwindet James plötzlich und Sarah steht zwischen den Fronten.
Das Buch spielt mit den Charakteren und der Geschichte Austens bringt jedoch auch seinen ganz eigenen Stil mit ein. Die Geschichte zeigt ein Liebesdreieck zwischen James, dem dunklen Dienstboten und Sarah auf. Im weiteren Verlauf des Buches zeigen sich jedoch auch persönliche Geschichten aller anderen Figuren auf. So werden zum Beispiel auch das Ehepaar Hill, mit oftmals sehr unerwarteten und überraschenden Wendungen aufgezeigt.
Ich persönlich mochte die Geschichte sehr, das Setting erinnert an 'Downtown Abbey' und natürlich allen anderen Romanen, welche wie Austens Vorlage zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts geschrieben wurden.

I read the book before Christmas, Longbourn by Jo Baker. The book tells the story of Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice'. But not Jane Austens characters are the most important but the servants instead.
Sarah is the personal maid of Elizabeth. She is one of five servants in the house. They were taken by Mr. and Mrs. Hill, the servant couple, to facilitate their own daughter and their household. One day James Smith turns up in the yard. He asks for recruitment and will soon be accepted. Sarah makes friends with him quickly. The matter miscalculates as the family Bingley moves in the neighborhood. They are taking their dark skinned servant with them, who quickly engages with Sarah. Afterwords all the other main characters of the original stories are introduced: Mr. Bingley, Mr. Darcy, Mr. Collins and Mr. Wickham. When the problems with Mr. Wickham come up, James suddenly disappears and Sarah stands between the fronts.
The book plays with the characters and the story of Austen but also brings his own style with. The story reveals a love triangle between James, the dark servant, and Sarah. As the book progresses, other personal stories of all the other characters are also revealed. This is how the couple Hill, with often very unexpected and surprising twists are shown.
Personally, I liked the story a lot, the setting is told like 'Downtown Abbey' and, of course, all the other novels that were written around the lifetime of Jane Austen.
