Plot

Nathan lebt in New York getrennt von Frau und Kind. Seine Frau Mallory hat sie verlassen, a er sich mehr um seine Arbeit als um sie kümmerte. Nathan ist in New York ein angesehener Anwalt der noch nie einen Prozess verloren hat und als knallhart gilt. Eines Tages trifft er auf einen angesehenen Doktor der ihm einen baldigen Kontakt mit dem Tod vorraussagt.

Charaktere

Nathan, kommt aus der sozialen Unterschicht. Seine Mutter war eine italienische Einwanderin, die seit seiner frühsten Kindheit als Hausmädchen für die Bostoner Aristokratie arbeitet. So landet er auch bei Mallory und ihren Eltern. Als er und seine Mutter sie einen Winter nach Nantucket begleiten, rettet er Mallory das Leben. Kurz darauf wird er an einer angesehenen Schule angenommen und beginnt seinen Aufstieg zu Ruhm und Ehre. Irgendwann heiratet er Mallory und das Paar bekommt Bonnie.

Mallory, wurde in die Bostoner Aristokratie hineingeboren. Sie lebte ihr ganzes Leben in Sicherheit. Mit Nathan ging sie ein Stück aus diesem behüteten Umfeld zurück und engagierte sich seitdem bei sämtlichen Organisationen die sich mit den Missständen der Welt beschäftigen.

Weiter Charaktere sind die Familien der beiden, sowie ihre Tochter Bonnie, der Arzt Garrett Goodrich und Nathans Assistentin Abby. Alle Charaktere unterstreichen den thematischen Schwerpunkt der Klassengesellschaft und des Verhaltens untereinander.

Setting

Das Buch spielt hauptsächlich in New York bei Nathan. Wir lernen sein Umfeld kennen und seinen Tagesab ,jhjklauf. Im Laufe des Buches begibt sich Nathan jedoch aufs Land zu Goodrich und nach San Diego um Bonnie abzuholen.

Schreibstil

Wir haben hier eine Erzählperspektive hauptsächlich aus Nathans Sicht. Er ist der Protagonist der Geschichte und es wird hauptsächlich auf seine Gefühle und Gedanken hingewiesen. Erst gegen Ende folgt Mallorys Sicht der Dinge und dann letztendlich in einem kurzen Kapitel, die aller anderen Figuren, mit ihrer Reaktion auf Nathans Geschenk.

Fazit

Das Buch ist kein typischer Musso. Dafür ist hier viel zu viel Wert auf die inneren Gedanken Nathans gelegt. Des Weitern, findet weder ein Kriminalfall einen wichtigen Punkt, noch ein Schauplatz in Paris. Auch ist keine der Figuren französisch. Statdessen haben wir hier eine Geschichte von einem Mann der Angst davor hat bald zu sterben und deshalb versucht sein Leben aufzuräumen und die Fehler zu korrigieren. Nathan als knallharter und perfekter Anwalt versucht das Chaos zu schlichten was in seinem Privatleben herrscht. Der Schwerpunkt in diesem Buch liegt vor allem auf der Gesellschaft und deren Probleme. So wird zum Beispiel Nathans Mutter als italienische Einwanderin und Haushälterin von Mallorys Mutter wie ein Gegenstand behandelt. Nathans ganzer Lebensinhalt liegt darin sich endlich als wertvoll zu fühlen. Was letztendlich auch seine Ehe zerstört.

Was ich aber ziemlich verwirrend fand, war die Nebenhandlung mit Candance. Garrett weißt ihn auf sie hin, Nathan nimmt sich ihrer an und plötzlich ist sie Tod. Alles innerhalb von 50 Seiten, ohne das sie im Nachhinein noch einmal nennenswert aufgegriffen wird.

Also im Gegensatz zu den anderen Bücher eine Geschichte mit viel Tiefgang und Themen zum Nachdenken.

Nathan lives in New York separated from his wife and child. His wife Mallory has left him, as he cared more about his work than she has to offer. Nathan is in New York a respected lawyer who has never lost a case and is considered tough. One day he meets a respected doctor who tells him an early contact with death.

characters

Nathan, comes from the lower class. His mother was an Italian immigrant who works as a maid for the Boston aristocracy since his earliest childhood. So he ends up even with Mallory and their parents. When he and his mother accompany them a winter to Nantucket, he saves the life of Mallory. Shortly thereafter, he will be adopted at a prestigious school and begins his rise to glory. Eventually he marries Mallory and the couple gets Bonnie.

Mallory, was born in the Boston aristocracy. She lived her life in safety. With Nathan she went back a piece from this sheltered environment and engaged the deal with the grievances of the world since then in all organizations.

Next characters are the families of the two, and her daughter Bonnie, the doctor Garrett Goodrich and Nathan assistant Abby. All characters underscore the thematic focus of the class society and behavior among themselves.

setting

The book plays mainly in New York at Nathans. We get to know his surroundings and his daily routine. Throughout the book, Nathan, however, goes to the countryside to Goodrich and to San Diego to pick up Bonnie.

Writing style

We have here a narrative perspective mainly of Nathans view. He is the protagonist of the story and he is mainly referred to his feelings and thoughts. Only towards the end follows Mallory's view of things and then ultimately in a short chapter that all other figures, with their response to Nathan's gift.

Conclusion

The book is not a typical Musso. But here too much emphasis is placed on the inner thoughts of Nathan. Otherwise here you find neither a criminal case an important point, or even a scene in Paris. Also none of the figures is French. Instead here we have a story of a man who is afraid to die soon and therefore tries to clean up his life and to correct the errors. Nathan as a tough and perfect lawyer tried chaos to settle what prevails in his private life. The emphasis in this book is primarily on the company and its problems. For example, Nathan's mother is treated as an Italian immigrant and housekeeper of Mallory's mother like an object . Nathan's whole purpose in life is to finally feel as valuable. What ultimately destroyed his marriage.

But what I found quite confusing was the subplot with Candance. Garrett pushes his attention to it, Nathan takes care of her and suddenly she is death. Everything within 50 pages, without which it will be taken up again significantly in arrears.

So unlike the other books a story with a lot of depth and topics for reflection.
