Anthony Doerr, 1973 in Cleveland geboren, lebt mit seiner Frau und zwei Söhnen in Boise, Idaho. Neben Erzählungsbänden wie "Der Muschelsammler" veröffentlichte Doerr die Romane "Winklers Traum vom Wasser" und zuletzt "Alles Licht, das wir nicht sehen". 
Mit "Alles Licht, das wir nicht sehen" feiert Anthony Doerr einen überragenden Erfolg: Vom Geheimtipp der Indie-Buchhändler avancierte das Buch in Kürze zum Megabestseller in den Vereinigten Staaten. Seit 38 Wochen steht das Buch auf der New York Times Bestsellerliste und hat sich mittlerweile über eine Million Mal verkauft. 
Neben zahlreichen anderen Auszeichnungen wurde "Alles Licht, das wir nicht sehen" unter die Finalisten des National Book Award 2014 gewählt und von der New York Times Book Review als einer von fünf belletristischen Titeln als "Bestes Buch 2014" ausgezeichnet. Zudem wurde Anthony Doerr 2015 für den Titel der Pulitzer-Preis für Literatur zugesprochen.

Charakter

Marie-Laure ist seit ihrer frühsten Kindheit blind. Sie lebt mit ihrem Vater in einer kleinen Wohnung mitten in Paris. Jeden morgen begleitet sie ihren Vater ins Naturkundemuseum, wo ihr dieser Schlosser ist. Während ihr Vater arbeitet, läuft Marie-Laure durch das Museum und lässt sich von den Professoren belehren. Am liebsten hört Marie-Laure die Geschichten über Schnecken. So kommt es auch, das sie 10.000 Meilen unter dem Meer von Jules Verne und andere Abenteuergeschichten liest. Als die deutsche Wehrmacht in Paris einmaschiert, fliehen die beiden nach Saint Malo zu Marie-Laures Onkel. Hier kommt sie sowohl zum erste Mal mit dem Meer in Berührung und lernt die Haushälterin ihres Onkels kennen, zu der sie ein gutes Verhältnis aufbaut.

Werner Hausner verbringt seine Kindheit in einem Waisenhaus im Ruhrgebiet. Hier lebt er mit seiner kleinen Schwester seit dem Tod des Vaters in der Grube. Schon früh entpuppt er sich als begabt und technikbegeistert. So wird er in eine Militär-Eliteschule gebracht um dieses Talent auszubauen. In der Schule lernt er einen Jungen aus Berlin kennen, der an Vögeln und der Einfachheit des Lebens interessiert ist, sowie die Grausamkeit der Menschen. Werner merkt früh, das er toleranter ist als seine Mitschüler. Nach der Schule wird er einer Einheit zugewiesen, die sich damit befasst mit Hilfe von Funkgeräten feindliche Sendegeräte zu finden. So wird er auch nach Saint Malo gerufen.

Etienne, verlässt sein Haus nicht mehr. Seit er aus dem letzten Krieg zurückgekehrt ist, bekommt er in der Außenwelt Panik. Mit Hilfe eines riesigen Senders auf seinem Dachboden, spielt er Schallplatten mit der Stimme seines verstorbenen Bruders um an ihn zu Gedenken. Zu guter Letzt schließt er sich der Resistance an und gibt Koordinaten der feindlichen Schiffe durch.

Auch alle anderen unterstützenden Charaktere sind detailreich beschrieben und prägen die jeweiligen Protagonisten in ihrem Tun. So gibt Marie-Laures Vater ihr zum Beispiel eine detailgetreue hölzerne Nachbildung von Saint Malo damit diese sich in der Stadt zurecht finden kann. Oder eine Freundin der Haushälterin übergibt ihr einen Schlüssel für einen kleinen Zugang zum Meer, der für Marie-Laure zum wichtigsten Rückzugspunkt wird.

Setting

Das Buch spielt hauptsächlich in Saint Malo, doch sowohl auch in Paris als auch Deutschland. Jeder Ort ist detailreich beschrieben und prägt seinen Protagonisten. In Saint Malo findet das zusammentreffen dieser beiden Welten statt. Zeitlich ist das Buch in die Zeit des 2. Weltkriegs gesetzt, vom Beginn der Belagerung Frankreichs bis zur Befreiung der Bretagne.

Schreibstil

Doerr springt sowohl in der Zeit als auch in den Perspektiven. Wir haben die Perspektiven von Marie-Laure, Werner, Etienne, Marie-Laures Vater und dem deutschen Kunsthändler. Die Perspektiven springt um jeweils verschiedene Ansichten auf ein und den selben Faktor zu zeigen. Des Weiteren springt er in der Zeit, so befindet sich der Leser abwechselnd am Tag der Befreiung und auf der Lebenslinie von Marie-Laure und Werner. Es wird im Endeffekt ihr Leben und ihr hinleben bis zu diesem Moment gezeigt.

Fazit

Ich fand das Buch sehr schön.Es zeigt eine bewegende Lebensgeschichte zweier Individuuen, die eigentlichen nur darauf hinleben einander zu retten. Auch das Setting des 2. Weltkriegs wird sehr schön genutz um noch einmal die Verschiedenheit und Trennung der beiden Protagonisten zu zeigen. Alle Orte sind sehr schon beschrieben und prägen den Charakter sowohl aktiv als auch passiv. So wird zum Beispiel die behütet aufgewachsene Marie-Laure dazu genutzt, einen Schatz des Naturkundemuseums zu verstecken. Marie-Laure widerum ist dank jahrelangen Trainings perfekt darauf vorbereitet den Stein sowohl zu finden, als auch zu verstehen und ihn zu schützen.

Zu Anfang fand ich den Schreibstil ein wenig verwirrend, da ich bei den wiederholten Zeitsprüngen nie hinterherkam wer jetzt eigentlich wo und wann ist. Nach ein paar Seiten fängt es jedoch an sich aufzuklären.

Marie-Laure has been blind since early childhood. She lives with her father in a small apartment in the middle of Paris. Every morning she accompanies her father to the Natural History Museum, where he is the locksmith. While her father works, Marie-Laure runs through the museum and can be taught by the professors.  Marie-Laure prefers listening to the stories about snails. So it is also that she reads 10,000 miles under the sea of ​​Jules Verne and other adventure stories. When the German Wehrmacht comes into Paris, the two of them are fleeing  to Saint Malo to Marie-Laure's uncle. Here she comes both the first time with the sea in touch and get to know the housekeeper of her uncle, to which she builds a good relationship.

Werner Hausner spent his childhood in an orphanage in the Ruhr. Here he lives with his little sister since the death of the father in the pit. Early on, he turns out to be talented and enthusiastic about technology. Thus he is brought to a military elite school to expand this talent. At school he meets a boy from Berlin, who is interested in birds and the simplicity of life, as well as the cruelty of men. Werner noted early that he is more tolerant than his classmates. After school, he is assigned to a unit that is so concerned with the aid of radio equipment to find enemy transmitters. He is also called to Saint Malo.

Etienne,  no longer leaves his house. Since he has returned from the last war, he gets panic in the outside world. With the help of a huge transmitter in his attic, he plays records at his dead brother's voice to him to commemorate. Finally he joins the Resistance and gives coordinates of enemy ships through.

All other supporting characters are described detailed and characterize the respective protagonists in what they do. So are Marie-Laure's father her as an authentic wooden replica of Saint Malo so that she can find her way in the city. Or a friend of the housekeeper gives her a key to a small outlet to the sea,  which has become the main point of retreat for Marie-Laure.

setting

The book plays mainly in Saint Malo, but both also in Paris and Germany. Each place is described detailed and impressed his protagonist. In Saint Malo finds the clash of these two worlds instead. writing style

Conclusion

I found the book very beautiful .It shows a moving life story of two individuals, who the actual only on living to save each other on day. Also, the setting of the 2nd World War is very nice used to show once again the diversity and separation of the two protagonists. All locations are already described and define the character of both active and passive. For example, the guarded grown Marie-Laure is used to hide a treasure of the Natural History Museum. Marie-Laure on the other hand thanks to years of training perfectly on it to find the stone both, as well as to understand and protect him.

Initially I found the writing style a bit confusing, since I never came back in the repeated time jumps who actually where and when is now. After a few pages, however, it begins to clarify itself.
